Pike County Breakdown
I chose backup musicians who could help me transcribe as close as possible the original Flatt and Scruggs Mercury recording released in May 1952. Clear Channel consists of Dave Richardson-5 String Banjo and Mandolin, Dean Knight-Bass, Elias Schwartzman-Fiddle, and Calvin Anderson-Guitar.
As a kid I listened to Jimmy Martin every night which was broadcast on nearby WWVA Radio. I pretended I could play like a young J.D. Crowe who then lived near Wheeling, WV. Musicians in this effort are Dave Richardson-5 String Banjo and Mandolin, Dean Knight-Bass, Blaine Sprouse-Fiddle, and Bob Fitch-Guitar
I learned this pair of songs from Earl Scruggs and Bill Keith. Ron Stewart played the wonderful fiddle and mandolin work. I am playing banjo, bass, and guitar.
This is one of my all time favorite banjo tunes. It was written by Richard Underwood, a long time player with the Johnson Mountain Boys. I played banjo, guitar, bass and mandolin on this number. Ron Stewart did a fantastic job on fiddle in this tune.
